    2013-01-13 16:41:06

China's biggest homemade blockbuster(国产大片) reaps 1.2 billion yuan and is closing in on the box-office champion(票房冠军) Avatar.

"Tai" in the movie title "Tai Jiong" not only refers to Thailand, where much of the story takes place, but also to "peace of mind", a dictionary-listed definition of the word, explains the actor-director-writer of Lost in Thailand (泰囧)Xu Zheng. What has attracted 32 million people to the movie theater could be the "jiong" part of the title - a new Chinese word that graphically captures an expression of awkwardness and foolishness(囧的英语表达), tinged with self-mockery(自嘲). "It is the opposite of "tai", of which I found plenty while on a trip to Thailand," says Xu. "This is a country where the pace of life is slower than China, and people seem to be more secure and happier."

Xu portrays a business executive who has to beat his rival to find the largest shareholder of their company and get his seal of authorization. That means billions of yuan in future income. On his journey, he bumps into an idiot savant(智者), who keeps wrecking his plans."A stranger you meet on the road who has a completely different perspective on life may change you forever," Xu believes. "While my character represents an urban lifestyle. and the pursuit of wealth, Wang Baoqiang's character embodies the grassroots(草根), optimism and values that are not materialistic at all." They are the polar opposites(反差极大) in almost everything, which is the departure point for many of the gags in the road comedy. But it was Manfred Wong, a Hong Kong writer-producer, who first paired the two in the 2010 comedy Lost on Journey.

That film, about the trials and tribulations of Chinese people returning home for Chinese New Year, was inspired by an American flick, the 1987 comedy Planes, Trains and Automobiles, starring Steve Martin and John Candy.

Xu enlisted(争取某人帮助) his wife, Tao Hong, an actress who has a cameo(名演员出演的小角色) in the movie. "After I wrote each draft, she would be my first reader and give me feedback," Xu says.

A couple of weeks before the movie opened, Xu was spotted by paparazzi(狗仔队) with another girl, in a supposedly suspicious situation. He later clarified that it was a misunderstanding, but did not respond to claims that it was a marketing ploy for the movie.

The movie showcases many Thai delights, including its myriad temples, elephant rides, resort hotels, and especially the exotic phenomenon of "lady boys"(人妖), young transgender men who entertain clients for a living.

Tourism experts forecast that Chinese, in the afterglow of this smash hit, will swarm to the Southeast Asian country for the coming holiday season. Surprisingly, perhaps, Thai government and tourism agencies did not pay a single penny in product placement or tie-in(关联产品) promotions.

"The best comedy will not just make you laugh, but use laughter as a means to achieve joy. Tears often accompany this kind of laughter because there is latent suffering, through which audiences will be taken on a journey of discovery and wonderment, and when leaving the theater, a sense of gratification(满意). That is real comedy."

Flu Vaccine is 62% Effective, Say Health Officials

Based on early data from flu sufferers, health officials say the current influenza vaccine(疫苗) is 62% effective in reducing symptoms of the disease.

That means that those who are vaccinated are 62% less likely to need to see a doctor for their illness compared to those who are not vaccinated. While that’s a relatively low rate compared to those for childhood vaccines, which hovers(盘旋在上方) closer to 90% effectiveness and above, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) director Dr. Thomas Frieden said Friday that 62% is “in line with what we expect” with influenza shots, which have to be reformulated every year from best guesses about which virus strains(病毒种类) are likely to be circulating during the winter.

“The pick of the strains [in the current vaccine] is as good as it could have been this year,” Frieden told reporters during a teleconference. “Sixty two percent is far less than we wish it would be, but it’s [that] the glass is 62% full, or we have a 62% reduction in the number of people who would be going to the doctor if they hadn’t been vaccinated. So it’s certainly well worth the effort.”

The estimate, released by the CDC and published in the Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report (MMWR), is based on a preliminary(最初的) analysis of illness and vaccination rates among 1,155 children and adults over the month of December at five study sites. Because flu season extends through April, that percentage could change, but flu shots in previous seasons have ranged from being 50% to 70% effective in keeping people out of the doctor’s office.

Vaccination, Frieden, said, is still the best protection against influenza, especially since cases will continue to climb, as the wave of illness moves from the south and southeastern parts of the country, where it typically begins each season, westward. Spot shortages of flu vaccines have been reported, but not to the extent that entire regions are without vaccines. “It may be that you have to call a couple of places to find the vaccine but it should be available for you,” Dr. Joseph Bresee, chief of the epidemiology and prevention branch, influenza division at the CDC.

According to the agency’s latest flu statistics, there are signs that influenza activity is waning in some states; 24 states reported high levels of influenza-like illness among those coming to doctors’ offices and hospitals for treatment, compared to 29 states the previous week. Since September, 20 infants or children have died of influenza-related causes.

While the flu season picked up intensity(强烈) earlier than usual — in most years, cases peak in February — Frieden said it’s too early to tell whether the current wave is a harbinger(前兆) of more severe illness to come. But getting vaccinated is the best way to protect against getting sick and potentially spreading illness. If you are sick, health experts urge you to stay home, and to cover your coughs and sneezes and to wash your hands often. Using antiviral medications such as Tamiflu can relieve or shorten symptoms if you take them 48 hours after first feeling sick. “The only thing predictable about the flu is that it’s unpredictable,” said Frieden. “Only time will tell us how long the season lasts, and how moderate or how severe the season will be in the end.”

    2012-11-26 15:27:00

Did Climate Change Kill the Mayans? (TIME)

There are a lot of things that didn’t kill the Mayans: asteroid strikes(小行星撞击), planet-wide quakes, global cataclysms(大灾难) prophesied(预言) by shamans(巫师) and etched into ancient calendars. What did wipe them out was likely something that is far less mystical, and indeed is entirely familiar to modern civilizations: climate change. If you want a look at what we could face in the decades and centuries ahead, look at what one of the world’s greatest cultures suffered a millennium ago. That’s the conclusion of a newly released study and what it lacks in Hollywood-friendly drama, it makes up in sound — and scary — science.

The arc of the Mayan rise and fall is well known: The civilization first took hold in 1,800 BC, in the Central American region that now includes and surrounds Guatemala(危地马拉). It grew slowly until about 250 A.D. At that point, a great expansion of the culture — known to archaeologists as the Classic Period — began and continued to 900 A.D., yielding the architectural, political and textual artifacts that have so mesmerized(使得...入迷) scientists. But a decline began around 800 A.D. and led to a final collapse about 300 years later.

The Mayan arc was hardly smooth and steady, and there were periods of turbulence and decline even during the golden era. The great settlement of El Mirador埃尔.米拉多尔El Mirador)位于瓜地马拉市北部360公里的瓜地马拉,占地五十万英亩的丛林,隐藏着无数遗迹,研究者称之为玛雅文明的摇篮, which once might have been home to 100,000 people, collapsed around 300 A.D, for example. From the fifth to eighth centuries A.D., there was an explosion of the rich tablet texts that provided so many insights into how the Mayans lived and worked. Suddenly, however, starting in 775 A.D., the number of texts began to plunge by as much as 50%, a bellwether (前导)of a culture that was declining too.

There have been a lot of theories for what accounted for such cycles, with climate among the most-mentioned. The better the year-to-year weather — with plenty of rainfall and reasonably steady and predictable temperatures — the better crops do, and the more the culture and economy can expandthe more...the more句型). The texts have hinted at declines in productivity, perhaps climate-related, coinciding with generations of unrest, but there was never a precise way to confirm those writings. Analysis of lake sediments can yield a reliable reading of the levels of sulfur, oxygen isotopes (同位素)and other atmospheric markers at various points in history, which reveal a lot about rainfall and other critical variables. But the Mayans themselves often unwittingly disturbed those sediments, with deforestation — including wide-scale burnings — and fishing.

Anthropologist Douglas Kennett of Penn State University, leader of an international team of researchers from the U.S., Belize, Switzerland, Germany and elsewhere thus decided to look at another, less vulnerable, source of evidence: stalagmites(石笋) in caves. Some of the rainfall absorbed by the ground over the course of centuries will seep into caves and be incorporated into the drip-drip-drip of wet limestone that causes stalagmites to form. Oxygen isotopes entrained in the rain can provide an indicator of how wet a region was at any one point in history.

As Kennett and his colleagues reported in the current issue of Science, they focused their investigation on a cave in the jungles of Belize, which is within 1.5 km (.9 mi.) of one significant Mayan site and 19 mi. (30 km) of three others. In 2006, the scientists harvested a 22-in. (56-cm) stalagmite from deep within the cave. Knowing the rate at which stalagmites develop, they could calculate that the top 16.3 in. (415 mm) of it had been growing continuously since 40 B.C. Every 0.1 millimeter — or about four one-thousandths of an inch — corresponded to about 0.5 years. That’s an awfully fine-grained(细粒的,有细致纹理的,这里表示细致准确的) way to look at history, and the analysis led to some awfully detailed conclusions.

Droughts lasting at least a few decades each occurred from 200 to 1100 AD, and repeatedly coincided with struggles and upheaval(剧变) in the Mayan culture. There were dry periods in the 640 to 660 window, for example, and there was also a lot of warfare in that period, which makes sense for a culture fighting over dwindling(减少的) resources. Droughts from 820 to 870 similarly were associated with an outbreak of fighting, as well as the disintegration of local polities, or ruling bodies. The decline in historical texts began not long before another period of severe drying, and the collapse of the Mayan culture itself, directly corresponds to the most severe period of drying, from 1020 to 1100.

Broadly, explains Kennett, the most generous period of rainfall during the millennium or so the Mayans thrived was from 450 to 660. “This led to the proliferation of cities like Tikal, Copan and Carasol,” he says. “The new climate data show that this salubrious(气候有益于健康的) period was followed by a general drying trend…that triggered a decline in agricultural productivity and contributed to social fragmentation(分裂) and political collapse.”

The cause of the climate upheaval that claimed the Mayans was not, of course, human activity, since their culture thrived and died long before the industrial age. Instead it was caused by the combined effects of El Niño events and changes in the northeast and southeast equatorial(赤道的) winds known as the intertropical convergence zone(热带辐合区). “The preceding conditions stimulating societal complexity and population expansion helped set the stage for later stress on [Mayan] societies and the fragmentation of political institutions.”

This should not give comfort to the dwindling band of modern-day climate-change deniers likely to take the study as proof that the planet’s current climate woes are merely natural fluctuations. The Mayan drying trend played out over centuries, after all. What we’ve been experiencing is the more abrupt, short time-scale variety, a phenomenon that was first foreseen in climate models nearly 40 years ago, and has been unfolding pretty much on schedule and as predicted. The Mayans had no such power to forecast events and certainly couldn’t correct them. We can do both, and the lesson of the study is that we may pay mightily if we choose to take no action. No culture, as the vanished Mayans so starkly(严酷 illustrate, is too big to fail.

Life is What You Make it: Fanding Your Own Path to Fullfillment.

One of my father often-quoted tenets(原则,信条) is that a parent, if he has the means to do so, should give his children “enough to do anything, but not enough to do nothing.A  head start(先起步的优势,有利的开端,类似于我们说的 不输在起跑线上”) is fine; a free pass(免费乘车,这里指完全依靠父辈,自己坐享其成) is often a crippling(引起严重问题的) disservice (损害,破坏). When I turned 19, I received my inheritance---proceeds(收入,收益) from the sale of a farm, which my father converted(转变为) into Berkshire Hathaway stock(股份). At the time I received them, the shares were worth roughly $90,000. It was understood that I should expect nothing more.

So-what to do with the money? I was a student at Stanford University; there were no strings attached(无附带条件的, 无任何限制的). Fortunately, I’d had the advantage of seeing my older siblings(兄弟姐妹) burn through most of their cash; I didn’t want to follow down that path. At the other extreme, I might have done absolutely nothing with that stock—just left it in an account and forgotten about it. If I had picked the option, my shares would now be worth around &72 million. But I didn’t make the choice, and I don’t regret it for a second. People think I’m either lying or crazy when I say this, but it happens to be true, because I used my nest egg(个人储蓄金) to buy something more valuable than money: I used it to buy time.

My inheritance came to me around the time I was finally committing to(投入时间,金钱等) the pursuit of a career in music. As a pragmatic(务实的) Midwesterner with a very limited nest egg, I knew that I would have to find a way to turn my creative impulses into a livelihood(生计). But how did one do that? How would I find an audience, or clients, or a way to sell what I’d written and produced? I didn’t have a clue, but it was becoming clear to me that I wasn’t going to figure it out by staying in a university.

I decided to leave Standford and use my inheritance to buy the time it would take to figure out if I could make a go of it(口语表达,使成功) in music.

With the help from my father, I worked out a budget that would allow me to conserve my capital as long as possible. I moved to San Francisco, where I lived very frugally(节约地)----small apartment, funky(发臭的,肮脏的) car. My sole extravagance(奢侈,挥霍) was in expanding my recording equipment. I played the piano, wrote tunes, experimented with electronic sounds. Then, I put a classified ad(分类广告) in the San Francisco Chronicle, offering to record all comers in my studio.

And I waited until a very important bit of good luck tracked me down(找到我) one day in 1981, as I stood at a San Francisco curbside washing my crummy(低劣的 ,蹩脚的) old car. A neighbor with who I’d had nothing more than a nodding acquaintance(点头之交) happened by(偶然出现,恰好经过) and asked what I did for a living. When I told him I was a struggling composer, he suggested I get in touch with his son-in-law, an animator who was always in need of music. I followed up, and the son-in-law did have work for me. He’d been commissioned to create 10-second “intersticials”(插入性广告)---quick ads meant to flash a logo and establish a brand ID for a newly conceived cable channel(有线电视频道).

I took the work. And the cable channel more than launched; it rocketd to the moon(非常轰动). It was called MTV(音乐电视,美国一家播放音乐录像的电视公司). Soon many TV outlets (电视台)wanted to look and sound like MTV. I no longer had to take on unpaid work.

My inheritance was relatively modest, but it was more than most young people receive to get a start in life. Having that money was a privilege, a gift I had not earned. If I’d faced the necessity of making a living from day one, I would not have been able to follow the path I chose.

Would my father have helped me get started if I’d chosen a career on Wall Street? I’m sure he would have. Would he have given me a job at Berkshire Hathaway if I’d asked for one? I suppose so. But in either of those cases, the onus(责任,义务) would have been on me to demonstrate that I felt a true vocation for those fields, rather than simply taking the course of least resistance(阻力最小的路). My father would not have served as an enabler(使可能发生的人) of my taking the easy out. That would not have been an exercise of privilege, but of diminishment(贬低).

He muscled his way onto the crowded subway car. A “lot of muscle”就是说很多保镖。 That gangster has a lot of enemies, so he always brings a lot of muscle when he comes to town.

就像食草动物一样,他们友善温和,但在婚恋关系上却总少了些男子汉应有的主动(have no interest in actively pursuing women),他们缺乏信心,喜欢独处 (most herbivorous boys lack self-confidence, like to spend time alone, and use internet a lot.)

They don’t buy things to show off. Partly because they can’t afford to.

(an apparent reaction to the tough economy.

    2010-11-19 18:19:55

    Gettysburg Address

Delivered on the 19th Day of November, 1863 Cemetery Hill, Gettysburg, Pennsylvania

Fourscore and seven years ago, our fathers brought forth upon this continent a new Nation, conceived in Liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal. Now, we are engaged in a great Civil War, testing whether that Nation, or any nation so conceived and so dedicated, can long endure. We are met on a great battlefield of that war. We have come to dedicate a portion of that field as a final resting-place for those who gave their lives that Nation might live. It is altogether fitting and proper that we should do this.

But, in a larger sense, we cannot dedicate, we cannot consecrate, we cannot hallow this ground. The brave men, living and dead, who struggled here, have consecrated it far above our power to add or detract. The world will little note nor long remember what we say here, but it can never forget what they did here. It is for us, the living, rather to be dedicated to the great task remaining before us; that from these honored dead, we take increased devotion to that cause for which they gave the last full measure of devotion; that this Nation, under GOD, shall have a new birth of freedom; and that government of the People by the People and for the People shall not perish from the earth."

Having a baby is the equivalent of deciding that an uninterrupted night's sleep is overrated(高估). But mothers hoping to get a little more shut-eye(睡眠) by formula-feeding should put that notion to bed. It's just not true, according to a new study in the December issue of Pediatrics published online Monday.

No matter whether moms breast-fed, formula-fed or did a combination of both, they got the same amount of sleep and considered themselves equally exhausted. Score one for the breast-feeding advocates, who hope this study gives women on the fence (是母乳喂养还是人工喂养,态度举棋不定的妇女)another reason to commit to breastfeeding, which conveys well-documented(证据充分的) health benefits for baby — and mother. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends babies be exclusively breast-fed for six months and continue to receive breast milk for at least a year.

As the Expo 2010 Shanghai draws to a spectacular conclusion(精彩谢幕), the Italy Pavilion is getting ready to receive the World Exposition baton and embark on its journey towards Expo 2015 Milan based on the theme of "Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life."(滋养地球,生命之源)

The Milan Expo will be located on a 1.7-million-square-meter site in the northwest of the city that includes parts of the municipal territories of Pero and Rho, according to Formigoni's master plan.

The next Expo Garden will come in the form. of a large island surrounded by canals, where pavilions will be divided into six main exhibition areas. There will also be an amphitheater(圆形剧场), 12 catering service areas and a botanical garden, featuring a greenhouse with plants from all of the participating countries.

Expo 2015 Milan will offer a great communication and promotion platform. for primary-producing communities, farmers, food firms, catering companies and other companies seeking to make the most of innovative technologies in the food industry.

"The process will be inspired by traditional Italian food. It will evoke the flavors and colors of our land and our food, which is homely, genuine, but also rich and beautiful," said Formigoni.

Official statistics by Lombardy officials show that 60,000 farms in the region employ innovative technologies to cultivate a variety of crops, while about 8,000 agro-food companies produce and export their products all over the world.

Part of the theme - "Feeding the Planet" - indicates that, beyond the hedonistic (享乐的)aspect of consuming good food, lies the important aspect of food safety. This includes the need for quality certification.

Italy wants to continue using sustainability(可持续性) as the keyword for Expo 2015, according to Beniamino Quintieri, commissioner general of the Italy Pavilion.

"There is a common thread that runs between Expo 2010 and Expo 2015, uniting in a single, grand sense the dialogue between peoples: finding for all of humanity a path that is sustainable and environmentally friendly," he said.

(ART: assisted reproductive techology).

Doctors attribute the higher infertility rates among urbanities largely to late childbirth and a higher incidence of diseases causing infertility.

Eight to 10 out of every 100 married couples in China are diagnosed with infertility. The number of people receiving IVF treatment is snowballing.

The best child-bearing age for a woman is between 23 and 28. However, a number of women nowadays delay their marriage to their late 20s and try for a child in their 30s, when their fertility is on the decline.

    2010-09-12 16:24:10

    Spot dictation

Now the location of your college. Some colleges are in the center of huge cities. Some in the suburbs. And some are surrounded by fields and woods. Where your college is located will be important to your extracurricular life. The advantage of an urban college is that there are many exciting things to do off campus. Compared to a rural campus, there are more movies, plays, churches, restaurants, discos, museums and music. There is probably good public transportation. You are near airports, trains and several highways, making weekend or vacation trips to other places much easier. All of this means that off campus excitement is easy to reach and does not require a lot of planning. This can be an important part of a college education and of your growth. But this easily available entertainment can also tempt you away from your books. The disadvantages of an urban college can be expense and a lack of peace and quiet. Off campus living in the city is almost always more expensive. Even if you live at school, you’ll still eat and shop off campus often, probably more than you would at a rural campus. Many of those wonderful cultural events cost money and are hard to pass up. If you are moving to the city from the country, be prepared for unexpected expenses. An advantage of a rural college is the relaxed and often beautiful setting. Rural colleges may have a much more peaceful and cleaner air and campus activities will probably more important in your extracurricular life. It doesn’t mean that nothing happens off campus in small towns. It seems do. But they are more likely to be connected with schools. Rural colleges are often near good spots for outdoor activities, mountains, lakes and beaches. If you have any interest in outdoor activities, this is a good place to learn more. The disadvantages of the rural college can be isolation, boredom, and the difficulty of adjusting to a more relaxed life if you come from a big city. Life at a small rural college can become very in groan.

Most of us use oil in some way, and it is difficult to imagine the modern world without oil. But oil is not easy to find and get out of the earth as it is trapped deep down in the ground. We must first study the rocks carefully. When we think that the rocks in a certain place may contain oil, we load a metal tower in the location either on the land or under sea. This metal tower is called a derrick. The derrick is equipped with oil drilling machinery. The machine will cut a narrow hole down into the ground. Meanwhile a steel pipe is pushed down to stop the sides from falling and to keep out water. At last, if we have judged correctly, the oil would rush up the pipe with great force. This is basically how an oil well is set up. Oil, as we can see, is obtained more easily than coal. For coal, very often we must dig it from a mine and have it sent up to the ground surface. But for oil, it rushes up a pipe. If an oil well is made near the middle of the oil field, then natural gas can be obtained. In parts of the world, such gas is often sent through pipes to distant towns and cities, so that it can be used like coal gas in houses and factories

Question 15 Why is it difficult to find oil?

Question 16 What is a derrick?

Question 17 Why does the speaker say that oil is obtained more easily than coal?

Question 18 According to the speaker, what can be obtained when an oil well is made near the middle of the oil field?

    Q19-22

W:Good evening, Mr. Smith. It's nice to meet you and your boy in such nice and cozy weather. Is John going to school this year?

M: Yes, we are thinking of sending him to a private boarding school instead of the local state school.

W: Really? I wouldn't dream of sending my little boy away to some strange institution for months on end every year. It will break my heart every time.

M: I don't think so. I would say that a boarding school education is good for children because it teaches them to have confidence in themselves. In a boarding school they can learn to be more independent of themselves and less dependent on their parents.

W:But not every child can afford to go to a private school. My nephew only went to his local state school and he's just been awarded the scholarship to study classics at Cambridge.

M:Anyway a private school is more innovative and open-minded in teaching children to learn. You will get the value of your money and it's worthwhile.

W:Still I don't know what I will do with my little boy next year. I don't want him to go to that big new school. The children of all the common people in the area go there.

M:Well they are closing all the old schools. If you don't like the new state school you will just have to pay to send him to a private school, won't you?

    19) According to the man, what is good about a private boarding school?

    20) Why does the woman mention her nephew in the conversation?

    21) Which of following can be concluded from the conversation?

    22) What is the woman worried about?

    Q23-26

Earthquakes are violent, distractive and unpredictable. The overall history of earthquakes leads to one general rule: The more time that has passed since the earthquake, the bigger the chance one will strike. Scientists therefore use information about past earthquakes to guess probabilities about future earthquakes. For example, they say that within the next 30 years, there is a sixty percent probability that an earthquake will hit somewhere in southern California. But exactly where or when is a mystery. In at least one case, an earthquake in Northern China has been predicted by paying attention to clues from nature. In China, earthquakes-happen study for nearly 4000 years. And there are records of more than 9000 earthquakes going back to the year 1831 BC. The official earthquake records of the state of California only go back to 1930. In their long, hard look at earthquakes, the Chinese have observed many things. Before an earthquake, animals start to act strangely. The ground changed shape, and the earth magnetic field gets stronger in the earthquake area. The water in wells bubbles up and then returns to its normal level. Also a serious of small earthquakes can mean that a big quake is on its way. The Chinese use these clues in 1974 to make the first successful prediction of an earthquake. The United States’ geological survey, on the other hand, has never predicted a major earthquake.

Question 23: What is the general rule about the occurrence of an earthquake?

Question 24: According to the speaker, which area is likely to be hit by an earthquake within the next 30 years?

Question 25: How long have the Chinese studied earthquakes?

Question 26: Which of the following is not a clue that is used by the Chinese to predict an earthquake?

    Q27-30

M: How did you like the fireworks last night?

W: I really didn’t enjoy them too much. There was such a big crowd that we couldn’t get very close.

M: I thought you were going early.

W: We did. But even though we got there at 7 o’clock, the park was already jammed. It was so crowded that we had a hard time finding a place even to stand.

M: That’s too bad, because the fireworks were really spectacular.

W: What did you do? How did you manage to get a good view?

M: We went early. We decided to have a picnic dinner in the park. So we’d be sure to get there early enough to find a good spot.

    W: I guess that’s what I should do next 4th of July.

M: We found a place on top of some rocks where nobody could get in front of us.

W: Wasn’t it pretty hot? The temperature was up in the 80s yesterday.

M: It was nice and cool where we were, because there were a lot of trees right behind us. So we had some shade to sit in.

W: What did you do about going home? I’ve never been pushed and shoved so much in my whole life.

M: Well, they ran extra buses until midnight, so we didn’t have any problem.

W: I think you were lucky.

M: It wasn’t luck, it was good planning. You have to come with us next year.

W: I don’t know whether I want to try it next year, even though I like fireworks, I don’t like big crowds.

M: Well, next year is still a long time away. And next weekend we are going to the beach, a whole bunch of us, would you like to come with us?

W: Yes, thank you, I would. And maybe I can find how you go about planning things.

Q 27 According to the woman, why couldn’t she enjoy the fireworks?

Q28 What did the man do to ensure a good view of the fireworks?

Q29 How did the man explain the success for their park trip?

Q30 What did the man do at the end of the conversation?

    1. Man is closed connected to the environment. Our environment provides us with fresh air to breathe,  clean water to drink and various vegetables to eat.  However, our environment  is faced with many dangers. It is seriously polluted with chemical wastes from factories and garbages from the city.  Trees are being cut down, large areas of forests are being destroy, and various animals are being hunted and killed. Today my topic is cultures and traditional holidays. Holidays are special times of respite from work and other routines. In some cases, they are legal holidays when stores, businesses government offices are officially closed. In other cases, they are celebrated without taking time off from work. Holidays are often times for celebration, eating, drinking, travel and family gatherings, but they may be also times of rest and reflection. The current trend is away from rest and reflection. Even Maniga, the day before the traditional reflective period of land, has turned into an entire week of parties, parades, and moneymaking, for those who make the annual pilgrimage to New Orleans.

In most countries, the scheduling of holidays originally is related to the seasons, the lunar cycle and religion.

Christmas, Dec 25th, celebrates the birth of Jesus. But it is not actually known whether Jesus was born in the winter time. The first woman emperor to her bath Christianity decided to have Christmas when days are shorter. This brings a spill of optimism to the long winter lumps. It also helps bring the Christianity to the pagans, who were accustomed to having festivals at the winter solstice, encouraging the warm and sunshine to return.

Over the years, Christmas has come to symbolize good will and generosity for both Christians and non-Christians through the personification of Santa clause, originally a Christian saint known as Santa Nicolas. Nowadays Rudolf the red-nose reindeer is almost as important a global symbol of Christmas as Jesus or Santa, and the commercialization of Christmas threatens to replace the generosity with greed. Many people forget that the original Christmas gifts were given by three wise men, all pagans, to Jesus, a Jewish child born in the manger. All they becoming of are gifts they give and receive and all the money they have spent.

One reason for the increasing popularity of Christmas is its proximity to the New Year’s Day, encouraging a long holiday to evolve out of birth. in the USA  the holiday has turned into a extended holiday season, lasting from thanksgiving in late November until new year’s day  with unseeingly endless parties , dinners , concerts parades and vocation trips. The schools and college are closed from middle December, though early January where people eat too much, drink too much and watch too much American football on TV. New Year gifts, cards and annual newsletters are exchanged and various festivities are not always very restful. Then the some people make new year’s resolutions to eat less, drink less, spend less and work harder in the coming year.

Christmas is by far the most important holiday in English speaking countries. Other important holidays, in addition to thanks giving day and New Year, are Valentine’s Day, Sam Patrick’s day, April fool’s day and Easter. On Valentine’s Day, celebrated on Feb. 14th, people give cards, chocolates, flowers, and kisses to their spouses and sweet hearts .on Saint Patrick’s Day, March 17th, people wear green to celebrate the luck of the Irish and eat corned beef and cabbage washed down with green beer.

During the Easter week, late march or early April, Christians remembered the death and resurrection of Jesus, while Jews celebrate pass over in memory of the escape of Jews from ancient Egypt where they had been salved.

Although it is not actually a holiday and has no religious connotation, April fool’s day celebrated on April 1st is a day when people play embarrassing tricks on friends and colleges and even their teachers. Another holiday, with some similarity to April fool’s day, is Halloween, on October 31st , when children wear funny or scary costumes and ask their neighbors for ticks or treats. And Halloween means hallow evening, the night before all saint’s day when Christians are honored.

On the following day, or “saint day” services and preys are set for the dead. In many countries, it is a day when families visit cemetery and place flowers on the tombs of their relevants. In Europe, labor day is celebrated on may 1st , whereas in Canada and united states, labor and labors’ day are honored as a legal holiday on the first Monday of September.

    1.  Owing to the overpopulation in urban areas and the lack of employment opportunity, the crime rate is also a huge problem we are faced with. The problem of delinquency is increasingly more serious in this area. Also, the lack of the traditional family structure and weakened bonds of kinship, lower the moral of the children bringing up in the urban areas. These children grow up in poverty and usually look at the crime as a quick and easy way out. The problems of urban areas are far more than can be handled than any short-term efforts. You can only hope to contain them and attempt to make sure that no more problems arise from the already existing ones.
